Chairs designed by Josef Frank (1947)

Chairs designed in 1947, textile designed in 1943–44. This dining chair remains one of the most popular of Frank’s furniture designs. He designed it shortly after his return to Stockholm in 1946. Terrazzo, which covers the chair at right, is one of the many textiles Frank created while living in New York City. The textile’s clever name precisely describes what the pattern resembles: colorful, abstract shapes representing stones set against a mosaic-like background. A departure from his motifs based on flora and fauna, Frank embraced mosaic and geometrical patterns for his carpet designs. Cut-and-polished agates or chalcedonies are the main stones depicted, along with a spiral-shaped mollusk fossil, which is placed throughout the pattern. Manufacturer: Svenskt Tenn, Stockholm, Sweden.
