Dining Room Casa Prieto López (1950-1952)

Dining Room from Casa Prieto. Table: Sabino wood. Chairs: Sabino wood and leather. Table frame and underside of top each impressed with “LUIS BARRAGAN CASA PRIETO 1952” and each chair impressed with “LUIS BARRAGAN CASA PRIETO 1950”. Provenance: Casa Eduardo Prieto López, Jardines del Pedregal de San Ángel, Mexico City, Mexico.
From 1948 to 1952, Barragán built and furnished a house at Jardines del Pedregal de San Ángel for the family of Eduardo Prieto López, a prominent lawyer and businessman. Comprised of planar surfaces and layered volumes, the house (and its furniture) referenced the simplicity and functional rigor of both European modernism and Mexican domestic architecture. Deeply committed to the project and with complete confidence in Barragán, Prieto-López was an ideal client. Barragán demanded total control over the entire house, insisting that Prieto-López discard all his furnishings and start afresh, going so far as to melt the family silver so that it could be recast to his own design.
